Mobile UPC Reader - Get Product Information on the Go

About the project

Mobile UPC Reader poster

The Mobile UPC Reader enables cell phones to act as barcode readers. Users with “smart” phones can install an application that scans a product's Universal Product Code (barcode) and returns information about the product. Users with lower end phones can photograph a barcode and MMS it to our server which decodes the images and sends an SMS text about the product.

Source code, binaries, and supporting libraries

Installing

It is recommended that you only attempt to install the nokia client on the 810 and rely on our server (hosted on coreofthebrain.com) to respond to requests. To Install nokia client, just upload zupcell-intertwined.py to nokia device.

Zebra UPC is a modified version of the Zebra barcode scanner. If you wish to use it with the web framework on your own webserver, edit the php files as appropriate to point to the location where you have installed the scanner.

You will need Image Magik to use the zebra reader.

Running

To run the barcode scanner on the nokia 810:

  1. sudo gainroot
  2. python zupcell-intertwined.py
  3. Place the barcode in front of the camera; try to get it as focused as possible.
  4. Application will take pictures and send to server until it receives a successful response.
